Research projects at BAEL

Dies Academicus winter semester 2010/11

In cooperation with the Linguistisches Forum, the BAEL team will present two of our ongoing research projects at this semester's Dies Academicus.

Emerging E-mail Etiquette (EEE)

When it comes to writing emails to a professor, students often hesitate. Which form of greeting is appropriate and which is too formal? We at BAEL are working with student mails to professors, looking both for formal and functional differences, to find possible "strategies" in their language behaviour.

Small talk across cultures (STAC)

Another project focuses on party small talk and the way in which people from different cultures differ in their party communication. How do (German) learners of the English language fit in? Do Americans have their particular ice-breakers and norms in contrast to the British?

We from Bonn Applied English Linguistics (BAEL) will be happy to tell you more about our findings within this semester's Dies Academicus.
