Guest Lecture by Dr. Bróna Murphy

Dr. Bróna Murphy (University College Dublin) held the lecture "Variational pragmatics: insights into hedging from the perspective of age and gender" in Room A of the English Seminar at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2008.

Dr. Bróna Murphy is lecturer in linguistics at the School of Irish, Celtic Studies, Irish Folklore and Linguistics at University College Dublin, Ireland. She has extensive experience in the building of large electronic corpora of spoken language, e.g. the Limerick Corpus of Irish English and the Limerick-Belfast Corpus of Spoken Academic English.

Her sociolinguistic research has centred on contrasting different age groups using corpus-based data in order to investigate the significance of age as a sociolinguistic variable that is often forgotten.

Dr. Murphy is a member of the Inter-varietal Applied Corpus Studies (IVACS) research centre.
