Dies Academicus summer semester 2010

At this semester’s Dies Academicus on May 19th the focus lay on BAEL’s (Bonn Applied English Linguistics) current research projects. Research and student assistants presented goals, methods and findings of ongoing studies that they are involved with in everyday office work. Many students and also visitors from outside the university found their way to our Research Centre in Walter-Flex-Str. to join the afternoon workshop.

After a brief introduction by Professor Schneider the three research teams each presented their project and gave interesting insights into their work: Small talk between strangers, politeness in emails and culture-specific mental concepts behind utterances are topics of our ongoing research projects. The audience had the opportunity to work with original data to see what it is like doing a linguist’s job. They participated actively and shared their own ideas and experiences in lively discussions. All in all the new format of the RCEP open day turned out to be a full success.
